To many, the quest of winning eight gold medals at a single games seemed impossible. To Phelps, it was very attainable. It was Phelps’ history-making eighth gold medal of these games.” Everything was accomplished,” he said. “I will have the medals forever.” Phelps sure did his part to win No. 8, Aaron Peirsol got the Americans off to the lead in the backstroke, but Brendan Hansen — a major disappointment in this Olympic year — slowed them down with only the third-fastest breaststroke leg.
By the time Phelps dived in for the butterfly, the U.S. was trailing Australia and Japan. That’s when he really went to work. With his long arms whirling across the water like propellers, Phelps caught the two guys ahead of him on the return lap and passed off to Lezak a lead of less than a second for the freestyle. The Australians countered with former world record-holder Eamon Sullivan as their anchor.” I was thinking not to blow the lead,” Lezak said. “I was really nervous.” Sullivan tried to chase down Lezak and appeared to be gaining as they came to the wall, but Lezak finished in 3 minutes, 29.34 seconds — Phelps’ seventh world record in his personal Great Haul of China.
Phelps leaned over the blocks, looking to make sure Lezak touched first. Assured the Americans had won, he thrust both index fingers in the air, pumped his right arm and let out a scream. Peirsol also yelled and slapped Phelps in the chest.”I don’t even know what to feel right now,” Phelps said. “There’s so much emotion going through my head and so much excitement. I kind of just want to see my mom.”
“The Beijing Olympics has witnessed the greatest Olympian of all time — Michael Phelps of the USA,” the announcer said as Phelps posed with his teammates. The Americans still had to wait a couple of tantalizing minutes for the official results to be posted. Finally, it flashed on the board. World record. Gold medal No. 8.
“Nothing is impossible,” Phelps said. “With so many people saying it couldn’t be done, all it takes is an imagination, and that’s something I learned and something that helped me.”
Phelps, who won three relays in Beijing along with five individual races, gave a shout-out to all his teammates for helping him take down Spitz. Phelps set seven world records and one Olympic record, doing a personal best time in every event.

There was more track delight for Jamaica, with a clean sweep of the medals in the women’s 100 meters to go with compatriot Usain Bolt’s dazzling world record display in the men’s sprint.Bolt, 21, who nearly did not run in the event because he considers himself better at 200 metres, recorded a time of 9.69 seconds. Bolt powered away from the rest of the field in the final 20 metres and even found time to begin his celebrations before crossing the line.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Richard Thompson set a new personal-best of 9.89secs to land silver, as did America’s Walter Dix who registered 9.91sec for the bronze. Bolt’s fellow countryman Asafa Powell, one of the pre-race favorites could only manage fifth in 9.95sec as six men went under 10 seconds.
American world champion Tyson Gay, meanwhile, had earlier thrown up a surprise when he failed to progress to the final, finishing fifth in 10.05secs. Gay won the 100m and 200m in Osaka last year but his preparation for Beijing was ruined by a hamstring injury suffered in the 200m at the US trials at the start of July.
“I want to say, I came here to prove I am the best. I have trained for years for this and prepared for this. I’m just happy, I came here to prove that I’m the best in the world and I did that. I came here with a plan and I executed it. Most people did not expect me to make the semi-finals but I did, but I would have had to run a personal best to make the final,” he(Bolt) said.

The winner of the title of the Largest Ocean Carnivore goes to the Sperm whale. The largest toothed whale species in the world. Adult males can grow up to 60 feet long and weigh 40 tons (read - 80,000 pounds!). Males are usually about twice as large as the females. They have a pretty long life span, about as long as people, living up to 70 years. Sperm whales have been found living in every ocean in the world.
Just like you and me, the sperm whale is born without teeth. They drink milk from their mother’s mammary glands, just like baby people do. The largest teeth are 11 inches long! That’s about as long as an adult human’s forearm. Their favorite food is squid.
It takes a lot of food to keep a big sperm whale happy - about a ton of food a day. Scientists have measured them diving down as deep as 3,000 meters and holding their breath for two hours to go after the squid that they love to eat so much. They also feed on other creatures, such as octopus and fish. But sperm whales have been the stuff of legends because of their massive size and predatory nature and because of the telltale markings left on their bodies by the giant squid they stalk and hunt in the great ocean depths. The great ocean carnivore has been known to eat another great ocean carnivore - the great white shark! So the sperm whale really is the baddest of them all!

Roger Federer’s quest for his first Olympic medal came to a premature end Thursday at the Beijing Games. The top-seeded Swiss star lost a 6-4, 7-6 (2) decision to No. 8 American James Blake in the men’s singles quarter-finals.Federer was seeking his first Olympic medal after being blanked in Athens (2004) and Sydney (2000).
Thursday’s upset loss was a stunner when you consider Blake had won only a single set in his previous eight matches against Federer. Federer’s loss means there won’t be rematch in Sunday’s final against Spain’s Rafael Nadal, who won in epic fashion when they met for the Wimbledon title in July.
The Federer-Blake match began after a rain delay of three hours and 35 minutes. The late start seemed to put Federer off his game, as he repeatedly struggled to hold serve.Blake earned the first break in the final game of the opening set and on set point, Federer floated an easy backhand into the net. The Swiss player was broken again and fell behind 3-0 in the second set. Federer showed life by breaking back in the fifth game, and held serve the rest of the way to tie the match at 6-6.
Blake was brilliant in the tiebreaker, while Federer made two unforced errors, and when his return sailed long on match point, Blake screamed out in celebration.

Being one of the sponsors of Beijing Olympics 2008, Lenevo released a few Beijing Olympics 2008 themed USB flash drives to offset some of what the company spent. All the USB flash drives in the line are limited editions, which could explain the rather exorbitant price for at least one of them.
This year’s torch lighting event has got to be one of the most splendid things I’ve seen. The torch USB flash drive is shaped like a torch and actually uses the same material used for the Olympic torch itself. A bit of the Olympics torch doesn’t come cheap though; the 4GB flash drive costs $142. There’s the cheaper, toy-looking 4GB Mascot series which has six different colors with Fuwa the mascot and the Olympics logo at the front and back respectively. Another series is composed of five different medallion-like flash drives which have already sold out. Finally, there’s the 1GB titanium drive which comes in sets of five in a mahogany box, leaving people with no illusion that it’ll be on the lower-end of the price range.

“I have worked hard for this. It was my day. I have always believed that I could do this and am happy to have done it. I have been in the sport for ten years, and I know that the difference between winning and losing is not much. I didn’t do anything very different today,” said Abhinav, who has been battling with a career-threatening back problem in recent months.
The Punjab government on Monday announced a cash reward of Rs.10 million (Rs.1 crore) for the shooter as per its sports policy after Bindra won India’s first individual gold medal in Olympics history. Actor Bernie Mac’s spokeswoman says he died from complications due to pneumonia, but a rare autoimmune disorder he battled for years may have played a role, experts say.Mac, 50, suffered from sarcoidosis, which causes inflammation of the body’s tissues and small lumps known as granulomas to form. While the disease can attack any organ, more than 90% of patients have lung damage.
Bernie Mac struggled to live his last moments - and signaled to his wife Rhonda that his body was tired - and that he was tired.Rhonda spoke with People in an emotional interview describing her husband’s shocking death. She and her sister Mary Ann went to see him Friday, the day before his death:
“He struggled for his life. He couldn’t breathe. He opened his eyes on his own and looked at Rhonda.”
“She called his name, and he opened his eyes and nodded to her. She smiled at him and told him, ‘Don’t leave me…’I'm waiting for you to come back.’”
“He shrugged his shoulders, and she said that’s when she knew he was tired. He signaled to her that his body was tired.”
Just before Bernie died, “[the doctors] were working on him. They tried to resuscitate him two times. One time he came back for about an hour. Then he went into cardiac arrest the second time.”
